Sustainability is more important than ever. Climate change is a reality we can no longer ignore, and consumers are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact. Even when buying a beautiful bouquet of flowers, it’s possible to make a more sustainable choice. In this article, you’ll discover why choosing Alstroemeria is a responsible decision.

Sustainable Cultivation of Alstroemeria

Alstroemeria is one of the most sustainably grown cut flowers in the Netherlands. While many flowers and plants thrive in warm, humid conditions, Alstroemeria can be cultivated at relatively low temperatures. The crop also requires less supplemental lighting than many other flowers, reducing both electricity and gas consumption.

Many Alstroemeria growers continue to invest in more sustainable production methods, including LED lighting, reducing their carbon footprint, and moving towards carbon-neutral and fossil-free cultivation.

Plant breeders are also contributing by developing new Alstroemeria varieties that perform well under cooler growing conditions, have an even longer vase life, and offer improved resistance to diseases and pests. Another important focus is extending the productive life of the plants. Currently, Alstroemeria plants are typically used for four to five years to produce cut flowers. Extending this production cycle means plants need to be replaced less frequently, reducing energy consumption associated with crop renewal.

"We have invested in LED lighting and installed a lifting system that allows the lights to hang as close to the crop as possible. This provides the highest possible light intensity for the plants while using the least amount of energy."

Exceptional Vase Life

Alstroemeria is well known for its impressive vase life of around two weeks. During the first few days, many of the blooms are still in bud, gradually opening into eye-catching flowers. This makes Alstroemeria the perfect choice for consumers looking for a bouquet that stays beautiful for longer.

A longer vase life also means less waste and more enjoyment from every bouquet.

Tips to Make Your Alstroemeria Last Even Longer

In the flower shop

  • Place Alstroemeria stems in clean water, preferably with a flower conditioner. This helps extend shelf life while allowing the flowers to develop their colour without opening too quickly.

At home

  • Use a clean vase and add flower food. Even better, use flower food specifically developed for Alstroemeria.
  • Trim 2 to 3 centimetres from the stems using a sharp knife or scissors.
  • Place the flowers in a tall vase to provide proper support.
  • Remove any damaged or broken leaves.

Alstroemeria is an excellent choice for anyone looking for beautiful flowers with a lower environmental impact. Thanks to sustainable cultivation methods, long-lasting plants and exceptional vase life, it’s a flower you can enjoy for longer while making a more conscious choice.
