The sustainability of the ornamental horticulture sector is taking shape, and FSI certification (Floriculture Sustainability Initiative) plays a central role in this. For flower shops, traders and growers, it is no longer an option but a necessity. In this article, we explain what FSI is, what it means for your business and how you can meet the requirements.
FSI is a global collaboration platform of companies in the ornamental horticulture sector. Its aim is to make the cultivation and trade of flowers and plants more transparent, fairer and more environmentally friendly. Since its founding in 2013, more and more companies have joined. The ultimate goal: 100% of all flowers and plants provided with a sustainability certificate.
The FSI certification requirement through Royal FloraHolland is now partially in force. As of 1 January 2026, the requirement applies to members in the Direct Flex, Direct Focus and Auction Flex packages. For members in the Auction Focus package, the deadline is 1 July 2027. Without certification, you can no longer use the most important trading channels.
In addition, consumers are increasingly asking for sustainable flowers. With a certification, you demonstrate transparency and responsibility, and you build a stronger reputation.
FSI uses the so-called “Basket of Standards”: a collection of recognised certifications that meet international standards. To be FSI-compliant, a grower must hold both an environmental certificate and a GAP certificate (Good Agricultural Practices). Companies in a country designated by FSI as high-risk must additionally obtain a social certificate.
Some recognised certificates: MPS-GAP (most commonly chosen by Dutch companies), Fairtrade, GLOBALG.A.P. and Rainforest Alliance.
Growers with a total business turnover below €250,000 from ornamental horticulture products can make use of a small grower scheme. This scheme offers a more accessible and affordable path to certification, requiring just one combined certificate instead of the two separate certificates required by other growers.
As a florist, you benefit from FSI-certified products because you become more attractive to conscious customers, you can communicate transparently about the origin of your flowers and you contribute to a more sustainable sector.
As a florist, you do not need to obtain certification yourself, but working with certified suppliers is becoming the norm. All Alstroemeria growers hold the required certificates such as MPS ABC and MPS GAP. This means you can rely on the sustainability of the flowers in your shop, without having to go through a certification process yourself.
FSI is the driving force behind the sustainability of the ornamental horticulture sector. For florists, it represents an opportunity to distinguish themselves positively and maintain access to important markets. Whether you are a grower, trader or florist: FSI certification is the new standard.
