Sustainability is more important than ever. We can no longer ignore climate change and are paying more and more attention to the environment. Even when buying a beautiful bunch of flowers you can think about your impact on the earth. In this article you will read why you are making a conscious choice when you choose the Alstroemeria!
Cultivation of the Alstroemeria
Cultivation of Alstroemeria is one of the most sustainable crops within the industry in the Netherlands. Whereas many flowers and plants like a warm and humid climate, the Alstroemeria can be grown relatively cold. Also, the flower is exposed comparatively lightly and thus requires less electricity and gas. Several growers of Alstroemeria are currently working on innovation and sustainability, focusing for example on LED lighting, reducing the footprint, CO2 neutral and fossil-free cultivation.
In the breeding of new Alstroemeria varieties, optimization of varieties for cold(er) cultivation, extension of vase life and resistance of the plants is also considered. This includes looking at extending the cycle of Alstroemeria plants. Currently, these plants are used about four to five years for cut flower production. If this is extended, they are less likely to be replaced and less energy is needed for crop change.
We invested in LED lighting and chose to hang our LED lighting as close as possible to the plant by means of a hoisting installation. This results in the highest possible light level for the plant with the least possible energy consumption.

Long vase life
The Alstroemeria is known for its long vase life of about two weeks. Where the flower is still (partially) in bud for the first few days, it emerges as an eye-catcher in a bouquet. This makes the Alstroemeria the ideal option for consumers looking for a bouquet that lasts a long time. In the long run less waste is produced and as a consumer you will of course enjoy your bouquet of flowers for longer.
Tips to make your Alstroemerias last even longer
Care for your Alstroemerias in such a way that you can enjoy them to the fullest? We would like to give you some tips.
In the store:
- Place Alstroemerias in clean water, possibly with conditioner. This ensures longer shelf life and development of color without opening the flower too much.
In house
- Use a clean vase and add plant food. Even better, use specialty flower food specifically for Alstroemerias.
- Cut the stems two to three inches off with a knife or scissors.
- Give Alstroemerias adequate support with a tall vase.
- Remove the broken-off leaves.
