Busy in our greenhouses

The days are already getting longer, this means for us as growers the busy period is upon us. This is because a young Alstroemeria plant grows best when we plant "with the light," which is why most are planted in February and March. Before that time comes, we have already made quite a few preparations. In this article, we take you through the process.

Alstroemeria range at breeders follow

Each year many new Alstroemeria varieties are crossed and tested at breeders. Breeders of Alstroemeria regularly watch to track the growth and specific characteristics of the new and also existing varieties. Breeders carefully track the production of each species, but also look closely at how each species performs on different weather conditions throughout the year. Only the very best varieties remain and are propagated, making them available to growers.

Alstroemeria plants have limited availability

If we are going to plant Alstroemerias in the spring, it is important to order the plants no later than the fall. The reason for this is that not all varieties are readily available to every breeder. Breeders have to deal with a certain propagation factor of Alstroemeria plants. One species reproduces easier and faster than another. Therefore, the rule among breeders is "first come, first served.

Old crops are replaced

We cannot escape it: when we start planting the young Alstroemeria plants, the old crops must be uprooted. The growers take stock every year: we replace the sections of Alstroemeria that yield the least with better varieties. This ensures that we can continue to supply Alstroemeria of good quality. After all, a young crop produces flowers of heavier quality than an older crop. 

Waiting for the first branches to be harvested

After planting young crops, it takes about eight to 12 weeks before we can harvest the first branches. Fortunately, we have not replaced all of our crops and can continue to supply plenty of Alstroemeria in the meantime. With any luck, most of the new plants will be in production for Mother's Day, because our Alstroemerias are a solid foundation at any time and for any bouquet!

A trusted Alstroemeria variety is no longer available

It can just happen: a variety that you have been used to buying for a long time is now suddenly no longer available. Especially when that variety was grown by one of the growers.
