The Alstroemeria: a sustainable flower
The majority of the Alstroemeria from our growers is MPS-ABC certified. The Alstroemeria is not very susceptible to fungi and pests, so less and primarily biological crop protection is needed. It is therefore a sustainable choice compared with other types of flowers. This makes the Alstroemeria a safe and sustainable flower. But there is more.
Picking from one plant
Did you know that the flower is also sustainable, in the true sense of the word? It is possible to harvest from one plant for years. This benefits sustainable production. There is simply less crop protection needed. If protection is used at all, 90% of it is organic.
Recycled plastic sleeves
Transport between the grower and the florist is not always very careful. At the moment, we use plastic sleeves to protect the flowers. At first glance, this does not sound like a sustainable choice. However, there are currently few better alternatives to these plastic sleeves. It appears that many biodegradable types cannot be processed properly at all. In the waste systems of the country of origin - in our case mostly the Netherlands - the material is burned, causing a much higher CO2 emission than (recycled) plastic. That is why - for the time being - we still opt for the best protection with (recycled) plastic.
However, we are trying to make the cover a little smaller, so that ultimately much less plastic is needed, without losing the protective function.
At the moment, some growers of our promotion committee are doing tests with paper sleeves.
A sustainable circle
The greenhouse temperature in winter is on average low, 18 degrees. This requires less energy than other flower species. This easy-to-use flower variety also has another advantage: the flowers suffer little from mould. That's great, because we can use the flower waste as fertiliser in the greenhouse.
Little impact on the environment
This is a good thing if you have this flower in your assortment as standard. After all, the flowers are so pleasant to use and suitable for any occasion, that it is nice to know that it is also a flower with little impact on the environment.
