Although the Netherlands is known worldwide for growing flowers, there are other parts of the world that offer the perfect environment for growing beautiful flowers. In this article, Fedor van Veen of Together2Grow talks about growing Alstroemerias under natural conditions in Ethiopia in a partnership with Samore BV.

Growing under natural conditions

Just 20 km from the capital Addis Ababa, in the enchanting town of Sululta, we grow Alstroemeria and provide employment in this area. The first thing you notice when growing Alstroemeria in Ethiopia is the difference in natural conditions. With an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level, Sululta offers a unique microclimate. The flowers enjoy plenty of sunlight and cooler nights, which is beneficial for their growth and flowering. The abundance of light ensures good photosynthesis, while the cold nights ensure sturdy stems, flowers of intense color and excellent vase life.

Testing new Alstroemeria varieties

An essential aspect of our business is the constant search for new and improved Alstroemeria varieties. We believe in innovation and strive to continually offer our customers new and improved Alstroemeria varieties. Therefore, we have dedicated a special section of our greenhouse to testing various new varieties. When a new variety proves promising and meets our high standards, we proceed to plant a larger section in our greenhouse.

Harvested yesterday in Ethiopia is delivered tomorrow in the Netherlands

The convenient geographical location allows us to deliver efficiently. The proximity to the capital and the well-developed infrastructure facilitate transport and ensure fast delivery of fresh flowers. Alstroemerias harvested today can be at our location in Naaldwijk by tomorrow evening. This means that wholesalers and retailers can count on a constant supply of high-quality Alstroemerias, which are perfect for beautiful bouquets, arrangements and event decorations.
